It's hard to believe that it's been just three years since Google's open-source Android mobile operating system hit the scene. When the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, was released, the mobile landscape looked very different. Most people carried simple handsets that focused on making calls.

A year after Android was released, in the U.S. there was a single Apple iPhone on a single carrier, but there were eight different Android handsets with varying form factors available on three of the four major carriers.

Today, you can find a variety of Android phones on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. Even the little guys like Cricket and Virgin Mobile offer Android options. According to Comscore, Android enjoys 33 percent of the U.S. smartphone market today.

That's a lot of phones to choose from. To come up with our list, we've chosen two winners for each of the four major carriers, one for each of four smaller carriers, and, if you're contract-phobic, the best unlocked handset.

But you shouldn't believe the hype: All "4G" is not the same. In a 21-city test across the United States, we found that Verizon's new 4G LTE network is much faster than other mobile Web options, with speeds that often exceed home Internet connections.

There's no question that 4G is spreading across the nation, but there's a lot of confusion over what 4G exactly is. AT&T, MetroPCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless aren't just using varied technologies; sometimes they're implementing the same technology very differently.

So we sent six drivers on a cross-country road trip in Ford cars with lots of mobile phones and custom software designed by network testing firm Sensorly to see just how fast these 4G Internet connections really are. (See How We Tested for more details.)

Last year we tested with laptops. For our second annual test, we switched to phones, to more accurately reflect how Americans are using the mobile Internet. According to research firm NPD, as of the first quarter of 2011, more than half of all new mobile phones purchased in the U.S. were smartphones, and analysts have projected that will grow.

We didn't test voice quality or dropped calls, which we've already surveyed, as part of our annual Readers' Choice Awards. The tests for this story were all about mobile Internet.

We ran more than 140,000 tests in 21 cities. Not all the networks were available in all the cities, as you'll see on the individual city pages. Most notably, cities generally have either Cricket or MetroPCS as a local option.

As it’s still just an iOS revision, Apple needed another tool to bring about this level of change, which is why iOS 5 is accompanied by the public release of Apple’s iCloud service.

A primary goal of iOS 5 and iCloud is to enable users to access their content across any Apple device without manual syncing.

Nexus Prime, the next Google phone and the first handset in the world to arrive on shelves with the new Ice Crean Sandwich operating system on board, is expected to make an appearance on shelves in Canada in the near future.

The handset was already supposed to benefit from a global launch, but it seems that Samsung has already started to tease the availability of this device in Canada.

In an email sent to the press, Samsung notes that an Ice Cream Sandwich device will arrive on shelves in the near future, and that it will be unveiled in collaboration with Google.

Since the two companies are expected to unveil the new handset and the platform it will run under as soon as this week, chances are that the said email was indeed referring to Nexus Prime.

Taipei, May 26, 2011 (CENS)–Eric Schmidt, chairman of Google, will embark on an Asian tour, including Taiwan, in the second half this year, when he will visit Taiwanese clients and partners to push Android system in person.

Schmidt revealed the travel plan during a teleconference with Taiwanese press yesterday (May 25). During the trip, Schmidt will meet with representatives of Taiwanese firms adopting Android system, including brand vendors, such as HTC and ASUS, contract makers, such as Hon Hai and Wistron, and component suppliers, such as Mediatek and AU Optronics. The trip will inevitably spark a discussion on the competition between Android devices and Apple`s tablet PCs and smart phones.

As the world`s largest search engine firm, Google has extended its reach to the realms of mobile phones and PCs with the rollout of Android and Chrome systems. Schmidt pointed out that Android has achieved stunning success on the global markets. Its global partners have launched 310 models of Android-based products, selling 400,000 such products a day. In addition, there are 200,000 Android-based software products being sold in 131 countries.

Android-based mobiles phones boast largest global market share and its tablet PCs rank second place, trailing Apple iPad. Google`s next step is making inroads into the PC market with its Chrome system.
